Star brushes for the GIMP 2 by nekomukuro Star brushes for the GIMP 2 by nekomukuro
I just made this sets of animated star brushes for the GIMP. There are 6 of them: three are filled stars (in sizes 128x128, 64x64, 32x32), the other three are empty stars (same sizes). The brush is animated and drops stars with a random angle (there are 4 possible angles for each star).
I hope this description has sense O_ò

Well, these are my first GIMP animated brushes, so they're nothing really special.
I made them because I needed them and I thought they could be useful for someone else too. I don't need any credit if you use them, but if you let me know that you found them useful I'd just be happy to know. ^^

EDIT: Re-released under Creative Commons license (see the link below the image), version 2.5 or higher at your discretion.
About the attribution bit, I only ask you to place somewhere a link back to this page if you redistribute this brush package or a package derived from this. For the rest (i.e. artwork made with them) I don't need you to credit me or anything :) (of course, I appreciate if you let me know if you liked them and how you used them, but you don't need to :) )

To install them:
1) unpack the ZIP
2) copy the .gih files into your ".gimp-2.[whatever version you have]/brushes/" folder (for example, on Windows the path should be like "C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\.gimp-2.x\brushes\", on Linux it's "~/.gimp-2.x/brushes")
3) Done, start GIMP and put stars all around. ;) If GIMP is running already, you can refresh the brushes window and the new brushes will appear.

Hmm... There should be 2 possible folders for installing brushes, the first one which I suggest you to use is C:\Documents and Settings\*your-username*\.gimp-2.x\ (start from the C: drive and not from your document folder)
Substitute *your-username* with your name on the computer and 2.x is the number of your gimp version (most likely 2.6).
There should be a folder named "brushes" inside there. If there's not create it, I've seen some instances of Linux installs where those folders weren't created, maybe it might happen on Windows too.

If everything fails you can still go at the Gimp main installation folder which should be in C:\Program Files\Gimp\share\2.0\brushes

I'm not on Windows so I'm getting second-hand infos, I hope they're correct and can help you.

The trouble I'm having is with finding the brushes folder. Where would it be under in the Gimp files exactly?

I gave you the very exact paths to where the brushes folders should be located, if they're not there I don't know what else to say :| Has your hard disk a different label? (D? E? ...?). When you installed Gimp, did you install it in the default path?
Hey maybe are you under Vista? Because in that case I don't know if I can help you, I never used Vista and I don't know if it's any different.
Why don't you try to use the Windows file search function and search for '.gimp-*', simply 'gimp' or for 'brushes' in the whole hard disk? (pay attention to this, as it will probably want to search in your documents only by default, and it won't find anything. Tell it to search the whole hard disk and all files and folders/directories)

I'll try your sujestion. Hopefully it will work.

Indeed. Have you found the '.gimp-2.x' folder in your Documents and Settings folder? If there's no brushes folder in it just create one it like I said before, as it sometimes happens that it doesn't get created during install.

LOL the animation part threw me off for a second, do you mean scatter. When a brush just makes the pattern randomly and different angles and size? I would like to see just some regular star brushes also, will have to search more. Thanx 4 Dha Share, LATEZ~ d(-_^)

Ah so is that the right term? XD Dunno, they were called animated brushed in the docs I read to learn how to make them ^^; They only drop stars with different angles, each brush has fixed size. You can randomize the size with the random flag in the brush dynamics though.

I'm not insulting them, I mean, I can't even make a simple brush, much less stars. And the embarrasing thing is, i'm on advanced in gimp.

Ok O.o; See, I don't mind if you don't like them at all, it's your taste after all, everyone has different tastes and different needs... It's just that... a comment like "I don't like them" isn't very meaningful. :O_o: If you said to me what it's there that you don't like, it could have been an helpful critique, and I could even tell you thanks... but like that, it's an entirely pointless comment ^^; It doesn't bring any good to anyone, and you may offend someone that is sensitive about the matter ^^;

True my opinion is, there just to simple. I know you may think that's a dumb reason but I dont. :katana:

No I don't think it's a dumb reason. ^_^ It all depends to what do you need brushes for, if your works need different or more complex stuff, of course they're not suited for you. ^^ It's true, they *are* simple, and they're meant to be so, because I needed them that way. I made them for some simple decorated backgrounds in my webcomic, so their purpose is to be a simple decoration and nothing more. ^^ So, obviously, they aren't suited for all purposes. :)

If your Gimp is installed correctly, you *should* have one. :/ all those folders are created once Gimp is run the first time I think. You're using Windows, I suppose... I don't use Win so I was going by memory with that address in the description, and it might be wrong. Have a careful look around C:\Documents and Settings\ and all its subfolders (maybe inside of some Application Data folder, I'm not sure). There should be a Gimp folder with a brushes folder in it, along with patterns, levels and other stuff...
Otherwise, I guess you can always install them global-wise putting them in the main Gimp installation folder ._. Somewhere around C:\Programs\Gimp-something.... I don't really know exactly, I don't remember Windows paths anymore, sorry ^^; Just browse around.
Hope this helps you a bit ._.

Hey I was wondering if you'd be willing to license these brushes under a Creative Commons license. I think it helps the folks using your brushes to understand how'd you would prefer they use them if we all use standard licenses like the Creative Commons licenses. Anyway, just a suggestion! Thanks for the brushes, animated Gimp brushes are always fun to play with!!!

Oh, yes... it still wasn't possible to select CC licenses on dA when I submitted them, and I didn't think about it at all. :) You're right, it would be better to use a CC license, thanks for the suggestion :D
